A manufacturing production manager's job involves coordinating all the operations of various productions. It also involves production management and financial skills. It is also very necessary for a production manager to have deep knowledge of the production disciplines including a proper understanding of disciplines involved in the production process.

The manufacturing production manager has to ensure that the goods are produced efficiently in the right quantity at the right cost and in a right quality. Most important is that the production manager has to check that the goods are produced on time. A production manager may be working on anything such as medicines, food products, cars, airplane parts, etc. Their work may include monitoring the production process, making sure that the production targets are met on time, making production schedules, seeing to it that the quality of the product is maintained and last but not the least motivating and also supervising the employees.

A manufacturing production manager is usually involved with the selection and designing the equipment, the plant or factory layout, ordering the materials, etc. But once the production part starts, the production manager takes up the responsibility of the whole production process, stock control, health issues of the laborers and also their safety. They also have to keep a check on the efficiency of the machines. Their job also involves dealing with the higher level people. Throughout the production process they are responsible for making and also updating the reports and taking into consideration the problems that hamper the production process.



The production manager may have to work in shifts they may also work on weekend's holidays or late evenings if the production process has to go on to meet the deadlines. The production manager usually works in the office but some of the times they may have to spend their time on the production site or the factory floor to supervise and also carry out inspections and meet the supervisory staff. The production manager is usually responsible for the work at one particular site but it may happen that he may have to visit different sites if the work is more and there are numerous projects that are going on simultaneously.

No standard education is required in order to be a production manager. A graduate degree in business administration or related subject is sufficient. However, there are some diploma courses also available in production management too. There are also some universities that offer post graduate courses and degrees in production management.

People entering into this profession need to have a foundation degree, degree or higher national certificate/diploma and thus they can join in as a trainee production manager. There are also a wide variety of degrees that are available including science, business and management, engineering, etc.

There are some skills and qualities that a manufacturing production manager should possess. The production manager should always be able to:

•    Solve the problems of the workers around.
•    Think innovatively and also logically in a systematic way.
•    Be flexible and adaptable to all kinds of situations and environment.
•    Work hard to meet the targets that are set by the organization.
•    Communicate in a good way with people.
•    Work in a team and should also have knowledge of the hierarchy in the organization.
•    Operate computers and other relevant machines.

Fresh graduates are not aware of the work environment and hence are given training on the job for a couple of months. In the training process, the candidate is required to understand the work process, company policies, production line, purchasing, etc. Training to the production planners is usually given on the job. There are some larger companies and organizations that have graduate management training schemes which is a combination of work experience and training in various parts of the organization.

One can start as a supervisor and with time and good performance can get promoted to a production manager. A production manager may work efficiently only if he develops interest in the work. Though the working conditions and the job profile may depend upon the size and nature of the organization, it is important to have interest in the job. The major areas where the production planner should have interest are the production processes, organizing and co-coordinating with the people and the equipments and last but not the least the production planner should have interest in technical and engineering activities.

The future perspective in production jobs as a production planner is very vast. The demand for production planners in the sector of production jobs is constantly increasing. There is a high demand in production jobs for production planners with a high level of technical qualifications in the industries like electronics, food manufacturing, engineering, and information technology. There are a lot of vacancies in the leading multinationals in the department of manufacturing production manager jobs.

The figures here are very subjective and cannot be committed on. The average salary of a production manager can range from $50,000 to $68,000. The actual rates of a manufacturing production manager's job may vary depending upon the work profile and the nature and size of the organization. Sometimes it may also depend upon the employer and also where the people live.
