Manufacturing jobs making a comeback to Arizona, ManufacturingCrossing finds over 20,000 jobs nationwide.

March 01, 2011

Pasadena, CA — Arizona is becoming a manufacturing hub once again as several companies are setting up plants in the state, a comeback for the state after years of losing factory jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that since 1999, Arizona has lost around 36,500 jobs. But the Center for Workforce Development at Maricopa Community Colleges says that the state could gain 37,000 manufacturing jobs by 2018. In 2009, there were a little over 113,000 manufacturing jobs in the state.

The expected influx of several new manufacturing jobs is also prompting people to enter trade schools to learn the necessary skills. There has been increased enrollment at community colleges such as Mesa Community College and GateWay Community College.

Boeing and Intel are among the companies expanding their operations in Arizona. Boeing is going to bring about 680 high paying manufacturing jobs to Arizona because of its winning the new U.S. Air Force Tanker contract. This is in addition to the 4,800 employees the company already has in the state.

Intel has also announced that it is opening a $5 billion semiconductor fab near Chandler. The fab, to be named Fab 42 will be next to its currently running Fab 32. The new fab will bring another 4,000 hi-tech jobs to the state. Gestamp Solar Steel, a Spanish solar company, is expected to bring over 300 jobs to the state

ManufacturingCrossing CEO A. Harrison Barnes sees this as a sign of manufacturing jobs coming back to the country. ''It's not just Arizona where manufacturing is making a comeback. Our website has been tracking manufacturing jobs, and we have seen increased job openings nationwide.'' ManufacturingCrossing is a job aggregator site and has been able to find 20,000 manufacturing jobs.
