A production manager manages the production line of the manufacturing unit. Every manufacturing unit whether it is a clothes line, electronics unit or a textile unit, a production manager is part of the team. Depending upon the size of the manufacturing plant, the production manager may take care of the entire plant or just a part of it.

A production manager has various duties to perform throughout the day right from addressing the staff to reporting to his boss. The job of the production manager is to ensure that the products manufactured are of right quantity, right quality and are made within the estimated cost.

They are in-charge of visualizing, planning, directing and ensuring that the process of production, day to day business operations are being carried out efficiently. They make sure that the manufacturing of goods is within the budget and of a good quality. They monitor the production to ensure that the product is delivered on the scheduled time.



Besides these some of the duties he has to perform are as follows:
  • Supervising the employees working in the department
  • Directing various strategies to the marketing personnel interacting with all the employees including the supervisors and people looking after the production unit
  • Efficient execution of day to day manufactured products before the deadline
  • Taking proper care on quality and control measures of the manufactured products
  • Taking care of the profit graph of the organization
  • Assisting the company to hire, train, evaluate and develop the skills of staff
  • Managing day to day production process and ensure that the deliveries of the products are made the scheduled time
  • Motivating the staff to give their best and try to improve the productivity
  • Properly inspecting quality and control measures
  • Handling and scrutinizing all the documents related to the production department
  • Managing all the overseas consignments and the proceedings of the company need to be taken care of along with safety measures
  • Facilitating the legal formalities and arranging rest of the production related documents of the consignment
  • Chalking out a budget required for the material and analyzing the expected profit of the organization
Prior to taking up the position of a manufacturing production manager, it is important to have considerable work experience in this area. The qualifications required are as follows:
  • A foundation degree or a higher national certificate/diploma
  • Post Graduate course in operations management would be an added advantage
Entry qualification for degree courses are as follows:
  • Five GCSE's/S grades (A-C/1-3) and two or three A levels/four H grades, including mathematics and a science, or equivalent qualifications
  • A basic knowledge of computers, preferably Microsoft word, power point and other applications for presentation purpose is a must.
  • The production manager should also have some basic knowledge of accounts in order to analyze the trend of the graphs i.e. whether the company is earning profits or loss.
A production manager needs to have efficient skills to manage the staff. Some of the most required skills of a production manager are:
  • Should possess great Interpersonal skills
  • Must have good Analytical skills
  • Should be good at communicating
  • Must have Leadership quality
  • Should be a good planner
With a good combination of all these skills a production manager can look out for a good career ahead.

It is essential for a production manager to have an experience of more than two year in the operations department. There would be certain challenges that the production manager may have to confront. For example, the production manager may have to travel at times to resolve work related problems. The production manager should be available almost all the time at the manufacturing site to ensure smooth operations of the task.

There are employees who have faced tremendous down falls in their career due to some unfaithfulness to the organization and therefore it is said that faithfulness to the organization will always give to growth in all the terms. Being a Production Manager is indeed a challenging job, however, if you use the right skills at right place; you can make a successful career in this field.

The average salary a manufacturing product manager ranges from $55,700 to $94,850. The pay scale may vary, depending upon the experience and qualification. Production manager plays a very important role in business profitability. If you possess the required skills and qualification, you can seek a fantastic career as a Production Manager.
