Mirroring June Manufacturing Index, Hiring on ManufacturingCrossing.com Remains Strong

Pasadena, CA - The manufacturing sector expanded in June, according to the ISM report released this week. Excluding last month's contraction, manufacturing has grown for the past 49 consecutive months, and hiring demand continues to be strong for engineers and operators on ManufacturingCrossing.com.

The Institute for Supply Management reported manufacturing growth in June, after contraction in June. The PMI, a manufacturing economic indicator, was at 50.9 percent, where any reading above 50 percent indicates sector growth. After the May reading at 49 percent, industry officials had feared that last month could be the beginning of a downward trend in the manufacturing sector's growth. The growth of 1.9 percent over the previous month quelled worries that last month's reading could signal a sustained slowdown. Growth in the manufacturing sector occurred in the following order: Furniture Products; Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Paper; Electrical Equipment; Petroleum & Coal Products; Wood; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metal Products; Plastics & Rubber Products; Machinery; and Nonmetallic Mineral Products.

The manufacturing sector has been helped along by robust activity in the construction sector and strong vehicle sales. At the same time, the employment index dropped 1.4 percentage points from its May reading, suggesting that the sector could be reaching capacity in terms of filling worker needs. Survey respondents reported business growth, but also continued to express cautious optimism at the long-term sustainability of sales.

In spite of the ISM reporting a decline in its employment index, current manufacturing hiring trends do not seem to have abated - at least not for engineers and production-related jobs. Employment has been strong over the past few months as business activity grew in the industry and employers aggressively added workers to meet growth in sales and orders. Current hiring on ManufacturingCrossing.com continued to show sizeable demand in production and engineer jobs. The site has posted approximately 5,400 production and 5,200 engineer jobs last month.
