July Production Growth Pushes Hiring on ManufacturingCrossing.com

Manufacturing jobs rose for the second straight month in July, according to the latest ISM report. Increases in new orders and production have driven employer hiring on the job site ManufacturingCrossing.com.

The Institute for Supply Management reported sustained economic growth in its July report assessing the health of the manufacturing sector. Last month's PMI, a key manufacturing economic indicator, was at 55.4 percent, a 4.5 percent increase over the previous month. Any reading above 50 percent represents growth in the manufacturing sector, and this month's index reading marked the second consecutive month of economic expansion. Significantly, economic growth in the manufacturing sector has spurred employment growth as well. According to the ISM report, the manufacturing employment index was at 54.4 percent, an increase of nearly 6 percent from June's 48.7 reading.

Many of the respondents to the ISM survey reported growth that correlated with other market trends. The housing recovery and rapid pace of construction continued to push demand for electrical equipment, wood, and fabricated metal products. With new home owners looking to furnish their houses, orders for furniture and home décor products have increased.

One recent trend that has helped food manufacturers has been renewed consumer interest in gluten-free products. Recent moves by the Food and Drug Administration have sought to clarify the definition of gluten-free on product labeling and create stricter rules to prevent cross-contamination during production. For Americans with mild to severe gluten allergies, greater regulation and clearer labeling will allow them to enjoy more foods without worrying about ingesting products that might cause an allergic reaction. For manufacturers in the food industry, the opportunity to create and market new gluten-free product lines is promising. Many food manufacturers are investing heavily in creating new products, banking on the fact that gluten-free consumers will be a sizable and important market. Consequently, it has also led to the creation of a number of new jobs.

Hiring on ManufacturingCrossing.com reflected employer confidence that the current economic growth is here to stay. Many manufacturing production and engineering jobs have been listed on the site's job board. Employers were also seeking operators, supervisors, and technicians to help with day-to-day production at manufacturing sites. While there is considerable demand at the moment, most of it was for workers with at least mid-level to senior experience. For job seekers with entry-level or no experience, some employers will accept training or certification at technical schools in lieu of meeting minimum experience requirements.
