SunPower Corporation will add jobs to its US operations “immediately” in response to the extension in
solar power tax credits passed by the government last week.
The San Jose, California-based company may also build a solar module manufacturing plant in North America by the end of next year, CEO Tom Werner told the Reuters Global Environment Summit.
“We at SunPower will be adding jobs immediately because of the [tax credits],” he said. “This has a big impact on jobs in general, and SunPower is going to be at the forefront of that.”
The expansion would add hundreds of positions over the next 18 months to SunPower’s current workforce of about 4,000. The company has 1,000 employees in the United States and another 3,000 workers in the Philippines.
The
US government last week extended billions of dollars in tax credits for solar and other renewable energy sources in its financial bailout plan. The bill included a generous eight-year continuation of solar tax credits that the industry says will boost US demand for energy from the sun and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.
The measure gives businesses a 30% tax credit to offset the development costs of solar and other clean energy projects, and eliminated a $2,000 cap on tax credits for residential solar systems.
