Sock maker closes SC plant; 570 laid off

Mount Airy, North Carolina's Renfro Corporation is shutting its factory in the tiny town of Whitmire, South Carolina, leaving 570 people jobless.
The hosier employs over 5,200 people in the Carolinas, Alabama, Tennessee, Mexico, India, Pakistan and China.
In Whitmire, the Renfro sock factory is the only major plant. Renfro shut down its Mount Airy plant earlier in 2008, eliminating over 100 workers.
Whitmire is a town in Newberry County, along the Enoree River. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census.
