Performance Fibers announced plans to lay off 132 workers at its Moncure plant in North Carolina. The cuts will affect one-third of its current staff of nearly 400 workers. Those expected to lose their jobs will be notified in October and will be asked to leave by the beginning of next year.
Performance Fibers manufactures polyester that is used to reinforce tires and belts and for industrial fabrics and upholstery. The Richmond, Virginia-based company has been battling higher costs for materials, an increase in competition, and slumping demands.
Although this sector has continued to attract new jobs in North Carolina, Performance Fibers illustrates how the region is still affected by the global economy. In July, unemployment rose to 5.1%, the first time it has been above five percent in four years.
